From Mountain Peaks to Lake Shores
The elation of ascending the highest mountain on Earth is the experience of a lifetime and one that kiwi Michael Allsop will put to good use in his support of the new Ronald McDonald Family Retreat in Rotorua.
"I really want to use my amazing experience to benefit others," says Michael. "The Ronald McDonald Family Retreat in Rotorua is an amazing project and I hope I can help to raise the funds needed to bring this venture to life."
As an Air New Zealand international pilot Michael spends much of his time at great heights but the foundation training and preparation behind his achievement took his commitment to new levels. Reaching the summit this year on 24th May at 8:30am was the culmination of years of groundwork.
"It took a lot of work - one year of fitness training for a start," says Michael. "Then another 6 months of intense training including an oxygen training course. The 70 day trek towards Mt Everest is both intense and rewarding."
Michael plans to write a book for children about Mt Everest, including fun and factual information from a scientific and histroical point of view as well as telling his story. All proceeds from the book will go towards the Ronald McDonald Family Retreat.
